The Granger List

It’s here!

UPDATED October 8, 2018

Goodwin Granger began making rods in Denver, Colorado shortly after World War I. Several grades and models were produced until about 1942 when production was suspended for the Second World War. During the 1920s and 1930s, Granger fly rods acquired a deserved reputation for excellent casting characteristics, durability and the ability to handle almost any fishing situation.

After 1946, Wright & McGill leased and then acquired the Goodwin Granger rod-building operation and produced rods under the Granger name until the mid-1950s.

Knowledgable fishermen know that Granger rods are just as fishable today as they ever were. We've been collecting, fishing and evaluating Granger rods for over 45 years. Scott W. has even built and restored a few. If you're looking to acquire a genuine Granger -- from either the Goodwin Granger or Wright & McGill eras -- to fish or collect, please visit this page often and/or let us know exactly what you're looking for.

The fly rods offered will all be scarce, unique or very special.

9'0" Goodwin Granger Aristocrat, GA9053, 3/2, 5 3/4 oz., wrapped tan tipped brown. Varnish, grip and hardware are all in EX++ or better original condition, circa 1940. The swell at the heel of the grip may have been slightly reduced by a previous owner and there is a tiny dent on the lower reel seat pocket. Original olive drab twill bag and beige labeled tube. Nice patina and color. Fished very little; near collector quality. Great classic large trout, bass or light salmon rod. For 7/8 wt. lines.

9'6" Wright & McGill Granger Stream & Lake, SL9660, 3/2, 6 oz., wrapped red. All original and in Near Mint condition. Original bag and tube are also EX++, the bag is an unusual grey color with tan stitching and the labeled fiber tube is extraordinarily fine. I would bet this rod has been fished only once since the second tip top shows no guide wear at all. Up lock n/s reel seat. For 7/8 wt. lines.

Wright & McGill

8'0" Wright & McGill Granger Victory (GV8040); 3/2; 4 oz. This is an interesting rod in EX++ to N/M condition. The rod appears to have been professionally restored, but may just be a well-preserved and very late (circa 1954) example. It is wrapped in B&O jasper (no tipping) and bears two "Granger Victory" ink stamps, but no Wright & McGill stamp. The rod has nine black snake guides like higher grade Grangers, but no ghosting from previous guide placements. The up-locking nickel silver reel seat is the very last version used by W&M, and thus the markings are very light (with one tiny, tiny dent ~1/16”). Ferrules are tight and perfect. Wright & McGill aluminum tube (no label) and original bag. For 4/5 wt. lines.

8'6" Wright & McGill Granger Special (GS8642); 3/2; 4.5 oz. When was the last time you saw a BRAND NEW, vintage Granger? This GS8642 is very Special indeed. Never fished or even lawn cast. Original plastic protector on grip. Stamp/writing runs toward the grip. I doubt a reel has ever been mounted. Interestingly, and most unusually, this Special is wrapped in yellow/gold rather than the usual ‘snappy’ green! The tube is even in EX++ condition with original silver/green label. Bag is also original with a very little wear at top from being in the tube all these years. A fabulous, collector quality 8642 5 wt. Granger!
