The Classic Fly Reel List

Quality Fly Reels from the Finest Makers

UPDATED October 8, 2018

Classic doesn't necessarily mean 'old' or 'vintage', though many of the reels offered on The List have a few years and many fish to their credit. The reels offered are all of high quality spanning all eras of manufacture. From early reels by Edward Vom Hofe and Hardy, through post-WWII Pfluegers and Heddon Imperials, to today's custom bench-made and bespoke reels, The List may seem eclectic at first. However, every reel offered has one quality in common with all others on The List: it is a well made and enjoyable fly reel.

Hardy

Hardy 3-1/8” Uniqua

Hardy Uniqua fly reel

A neat little user-grade 3-1/8” Hardy Uniqua. Decent amount of leading remains on the frame, but a previous owner tried to re-black the spool and did a pretty fair job. Horseshoe latch. Good check with sharp gear teeth. Duplicated, engageable spares. Slight end play that can be fixed with a bit of Hot Sauce grease. Lots of miles left on this little vetran.

Pflueger

Pflueger Golden West 100 Yard

image180

A great example in the largest and hardest to find 100 yard size. Clean and tight with moderate scratching on the ebonite side plates. Tool marks on the pillar screws and oil cap. Two pillar screws have been replaced with original old-stock Pflueger screws. Very slight left-hand bias, but will wear in to whatever hand is used. A fine example of this scarce reel.

Thompson

Thompson 100 - Left Hand Wind Conversion - Owned by Harry Darbee

A very special Thompson 100. This reel was owned by well-known Catskills fly tier and shop owner Harry Darbee. As outlined in the provenance letter from Walt Carpenter, Mr. Darbee sent this Thompson back to the factory to be converted to wind lefty. (Not sure if this would have been to the original Thompson factory, or to R.L. Winston. Doug Merrick, Al Talbot and others at Winston eventually took over the remaining stocks of Thompson parts and continued to assemble reels.) The conversion is quite clever. The handle was removed from winding plate side. A second winding plate was added to the spool, complete with handle and spool-retaining screw, allowing the reel to be used lefty. The original check and brake drag has not been altered. This reel functions as every other Thompson and has an ingenious drag. Only one other Thompson converted to left hand wind is known. Mechanical condition is excellent, cosmetics show honest use. Letter of provenance in Walt Carpenter's hand is included. A truly special Thompson. Only selling because it goes unused, as I wind righty.
